Fluency grids are an effective tool that you can use to improve your students’ reading automaticity. Fluent readers have a higher ability to comprehend what they are reading which is the final goal of all reading instruction. Aligned with the Science of Reading, these fluency grids provide students with an opportunity to practice reading words with a focus sound. Each sound includes sheets with real words as well as sheets with nonsense words.
How do you use fluency grids?
Each fluency grid includes 5 different words that are scrambled in different positions across 6 lines. The student reads across the top line until all the words are read. Then, they move onto the next line and so on until the entire page has been read. You might like to have them complete this activity 3 times for extra practice.
