HOW DOES WORD MAPPING WORK?
Step 1: To begin, students place a picture on the mat, point to it and say the picture name.
Step 2: Then students map out the sounds they can hear in the word. They do this by tapping a circle for each sound. E.g. h – e – n. You can use playdough, counters or even leave the circles bare and have students tap them.
Step 3: Next, students write the letters (graphemes) in the Elkonin boxes that represent each phoneme they said aloud. Finally, they read the word aloud.
